What Happens at a Murder Mystery Hen Party?

Murder mysteries are fast becoming one of the most popular hen party activities for those looking for a unique and fun way to spend their hen night. They’re great fun and definitely not something you do on a typical night out!

So what exactly happens at a murder mystery party?

Well, that depends on what type of murder mystery event you opt for. You’ll usually find three different types of events: ones where professional actors play the suspects and victims , ones where the guests themselves act out clues for the rest of the guests with direction from actors (both of these are usually over dinner at a venue) and a home play version.

The Common Features of Murder Mystery Parties

Well, funnily enough, there’s usually a death! You may get to see the dead body or you may have photos. There are always some kind of clues and sometimes documents, official reports and prop clues to help you on the way to solve the murder.

Like on Cluedo where you guess it’s Miss Scarlet in the study with the candlestick, the goal is to suss out who the killer was, how they did it and their motive.

A lot of organised events will include a sit-down dinner with drinks, whilst some include a drinks reception event where the guests mingle and decide who they can and cannot trust!

There will often be themes, like a mob murder, a West End  Show jealousy killing, catwalk fighting or even a death at a wedding (how appropriate!). Some events can even customise it for you – hen party murder mystery theme anyone?!

An actor-led event

In a murder mystery event where the actors take centre stage, you’ll get to witness the action and scenes that act as clues as to who the murderer is. Think of it like a session of Poirot where all the plot twists and turns are laid out before you, except this time you get to act as Hercules Poirot and can interrogate the suspects, who make their way around the tables!

Where you play the suspects

In this event, you’ll typically be given roles to play and cues as to when to divulge clues and when to the rest of the group. You’ll generally have some secrets you need to keep hidden and tasks you need to achieve to pull off your role properly – like convincing people you weren’t having an affair!

This can take place at a venue, where there is usually an MC and an actor detective that will go around to help get things going, or you can buy games and do a DIY version at home.

So which type of murder mystery event should you go for?

We’ve tried both type of events and there are reasons to go with each.

If you’ve got a group that are bang up for being dramatic and relish the thought of performing, then ones where you take part as guests can be really fun (as well as more affordable). The downside can be that people have too much to drink or can’t really hear the other guests’ clues from the other side of the table and so can’t really follow what they’re  supposed to be doing or what’s happening.

If you’ve got some shy people amongst the group or you would simply prefer to take in a performance show (that’s can be  combined with comedy too) then opt for a staged act performance. It may be a little pricier but it’s usually a lot easier to follow and the actors will know just how to perfectly present the clues in a way that will keep you guessing until the very last minute!

If you opt for a DIY option then obviously this saves a lot of money and it would be perfect for a girly night in on a Friday night, leaving you to hit the town on the Saturday.
